macOS Golden Gate 27

(At WWDC26) Apple claims to have fixed the different corner ratios for windows in macOS Golden Gate 27 :tada:

Definitely speaking to designers and developers in that part of the keynote. Now to actually use Golden Gate…

Ah, someone captured the (only) relevant part (of the keynote):

(It was only boring/AI besides this… :sob:)

Have to say I liked the keynote quite a bit:

  • They seem to have fixed all (or most) of my UI issues I have with Tahoe (window corners, sidebars, sidebar icons, menubars, Liquid Glass, icons) and why I switched back to Sequoia
  • I like that they take a „Snow Leopard“ approach this year - focusing on improvements rather than on new features (that’s how I understood them); nonetheless all the usual tech bloggers or going to find all the changes that didn’t get screentime
  • I liked their approach to Siri AI and and real life usage scenarios … even my wife got excited for some AI features (never happened on any google, MS or other AI stuff :smirk:) until she learned we won’t get it in the EU until 2028 maybe .
  • I even valued their child protection approach, given how in many countries social media for children seems to be a topic and respective companies probably habe little interest in that.

Overall I found this presentation much more enjoyable than the Google or Microsoft stuff prior. Looking forward to the new versions.

Sorry, after Tahoe, I’ll take this with a pinch of salt. It’ll need some mega super user reviews for me to even contemplate leaving Sequioa.

They are literally addressing all sorts of things users have been complaining about and… users complain. Sucks to be Apple.

Me: I wish Apple would go a bug fix release like Snow Leooard, instead of just adding random new features
Also me: Where the new features?

With Apple’s statements about AI, with the liquid glass polarity, one thing seems sure. Users are going to be far more cautious in upgrading OSes moving forward.

I think this is going to be a great release. The UI looks so much better than Tahoe, lots of little speed improvements everywhere, bugs fixed. I’m here for Golden Gate.

Really looks like a “Snow Tahoe” to me. Fixes many Tahoe issues I’ve seen, and only new feature seems to be Siri AI.

Only ominous note to me is that when the Sequoia beta came out at WWDC24 I tried all the Apple AI features shown and none of them worked as shown (all faked!?). After installing the GG beta, there is a waiting list to get the Siri AI features. So, again, I can’t try the new features. My trust level is low.

And Apple really should have made GG available for Intel Macs, if only for the fixes to the messed up Tahoe UI.

Absolutely this. The Intel era did not deserve this sad ending!

They removed most icons in the menu items. They will keep those that are useful, like the previous version.

I was doing app development and when Tahoe was here, I had no choice but to update my Mac mini to the Beta, just because I need to test my apps on Liquid Glass. What a disaster it was and I regretted every moment, even though I am well aware of the intention. Fortunately, this round, there’s not a big UI difference, so I am not going to make the same mistake of upgrading and will try to hold on as much as I can. But, I really like the improvements that Apple promised, so here’s hoping it will go gold as soon as possible! I might risk a public beta 2 or 3 when it comes.

Most likely that’s not determined by the quality of the software (which might be better this year), but by the launch date of the new iPhones…

I agree. But Apple has never had a problem dropping support of old hardware. It dropped my 2003 PowerMac in 2009.

My MacBook is a file server for bank records and other files I don’t want online. And for archived files that I keep “just in case”. From what I’ve read Siri AI indexes each device separately. Which means it cannot search my Mac from my iPhone?

Is that correct? If so, then I’ll have no reason to upgrade from Sequioa.

I was just yesterday searching for first reviews and all I found were in praise for the developers beta. They claimed it was even better (error free – especially for a beta, faster, and also more thought through in terms of interface) than the latest Tahoe. Also in terms of the menu bar Apple apparently sherlocked more of the the ice.app functionality (rudimentarily) by showing hidden icons with a click. I am seriously considering installing it when it is being released to .1 version.

ooh, click to show hidden items is great

That is what they wrote in their reviews. Haven’t checked it, though (wouldn’t know where exactly).

Just installed this on the Neo since it’s not my primary Mac. I can’t even tell this is a beta and I haven’t come across any bugs so far. It’s better than Tahoe in every way. I wish Apple would do the “Snow Leopard” release every other year. It makes a difference.
